On and off the runway at Sydney's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week strong, bold and vibrant hues were seen everywhere. So pop it on where you can girls...block it out for a punchy effect or accent with a single pop of colour in one of your pieces. For those of you who steadfastly sticking to your basic blacks...add your pop in an accessory or a shoe....the safest way of injecting a little colour into your look. Hmmmm - verdict is still out for me on this one. While we love a tousled, just jumped out of bed hair-do, not so sure we should be taking it this far and sporting PJ look-a-likes around town. And while Rhi-Rhi looks absolutely fabulous in this silky little ensemble...common sense prevails for us mere mortals...she, after all, would look good in anything! My advice...if you want to try it out...start with just one piece...work silky pants with a knit a-la-Alexa....or pop on a pj shirt with your favourite denim...a nice little compromise that's much easier to pull off. The colour I am craving at the moment? MINT. Cool, icy mint. Don’t get me wrong...I’m down with ALL the pastel shades right now...so subtle, soft and ladylike...but mint has that somethin’, somethin’ that sets it apart from the rest. It’s edgy and can be worked in countless ways...as a duo with denim, a partner for prints...you get my drift... Here is a little inspiration for styling up this fabulous sherbet tone. What a lovely treat it was this week to catch up with Virginia Martin, designer behind the Melbourne label Búl. Stepping from the dimly lit corridors of eclectic Curtin House into her store was a little breath of fresh air...natural light streaming through open windows, a beachy wash of colour throughout the room, and lots of beautiful pieces to drool over. Bul’s offering for Autumn/Winter, the Cornwall collection, hit the spot for me as a go-to for fab little pieces for work and play...most pieces would double up quite nicely taking you from office to out-and-about the town with a simple accessory switch-up. What I loved most was the richness of textiles...from beautiful silks, to brocade and heavy wools....just the things you will want once our Melbourne winter goes full swing. Highlights for me...the Seaburn Skirt that I seriously need in my wardrobe (like, yesterday!), the Blyth Beach Coat in a gorgeous mushroom colour aptly called Fungi, and the beautiful Gillian Harbour Dress in navy as seen below on the designer herself (quite possibly the loveliest thing in store that day). I just seem to always find an amazing array of pieces whenever I step foot into a Opportunity Shop...and trust me, these feet step in A LOT! So, I thought I might just share the lovely little bits and pieces that I find along my way in a regular Styling Violet segment...Well Thrifted! Besides luck, I do think that there is a certain amount of 'skill' to doing really well in an op-shop. I pick up pieces that most would not even look twice at...I see past the piece and think about how it will be work and styled with other pieces. I scan carefully for pieces that are on trend in colour, and then check for quality and shape. Sometimes all a piece needs is a little tweak at the tailors to make it current...It's not an exaggeration to say I save hundreds of dollars shopping this way.
